Daff Workshop with Abdurrahman Smith
In this intensive day course, Ustadh Abdurrahman Smith will be teaching beginners how to play the daff. In addition to learning how to play the daff, there will be an opportunity to gain an understanding of daff’s history and variations, the daff in Islam, intentions when playing the daff, verbalising and transcribing rhythms, an explanation of rhythms and timings and much more.
Learning Outcomes
· To learn the background and history of the daff.
· To learn how to hold the daff, play the main strokes and play rhythms.
· To learn how rhythms can be verbalised and transcribed.
· Learn how to play along with nasheed and qasida singers.

Course material: A copy of ‘How to play the daff with nasheeds’ will be given to each student. Please bring your daff if you have one. The institute has a limited number of daffs that can be used by delegates if they don't have a daff.

Brief biography of the instructor
Having studied music in his youth and after accepting Islam in his teens, Abdurrahman Smith taught himself how to play the daff and was able to understand the theory behind its use in Islamic settings. In addition to teaching the daff in person and online, his book How to Play Daff with Nasheeds is one of the first in the English language to explore the subject of the daff, helping readers to learn the daff on their own. He also has a popular YouTube channel on which he demonstrates how to play the daff and the various rhythms that can be used to accompany some of the world’s most famous nasheeds.
