Jinn and Tonic: Medicine in Islamic Theology, Law and History

Lecture Overview:

This lecture delves into the profound relationship between health, illness, and spirituality in the Islamic tradition. We will explore the spiritual significance of both health and illness, considering how these states are viewed as tests and blessings within the framework of faith. Central to our discussion will be the theological questions surrounding fate (Qadr) and illness, examining how these concepts influence a believer's approach to suffering and healing.

Additionally, the lecture will address the concept of tawakkul (reliance on God) in the context of seeking medical treatment, questioning how this reliance is balanced with the use of medication. We will also discuss the legal status of using medicine in Islamic law, including the ethical implications of using substances considered unlawful (haram) in treatment.

The lecture will conclude with an exploration of Prophetic Medicine (Tibb al-Nabawi), offering insights into the traditional remedies and practices recommended by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and how they fit within the broader discussion of health and spirituality in Islam.

Join us for a thought-provoking session that merges the spiritual, legal, and medical dimensions of health and illness, providing a holistic understanding rooted in Islamic teachings.
